Personal EssayThe personal essay is your chance to show the admissions committee your personality, talents, commitment, who you really are, and help you stand out from all the other applicants. How important is the essay? A 2006 report published by the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) found that while grades, admission tests, and class rank remain the top factors in the college admission decision, a majority of colleges and universities consider the essay to be a key factor in determining which academically qualified students they would choose. In other words, when all else is equal between competing applicants, a compelling essay can make the difference. A powerful, well-written essay can also tip the balance for a marginal applicant. (www.collegeboard.com) Getting Started Brainstorming: The goal is to develop ideas that you can use in your personal essay. Try thinking about your accomplishments, skills or qualities that distinguish you from others; favorite book or character; something that you struggled with and overcame or failed; who are your role models and why; or your extracurricular or community activities. Ask for help from your parents, friends, teachers. Check out www.quintcareers.com/college_application_essay.html for more help and sample essays. Writing the Essay
