PRACTICAL NURSING

The practical nursing program is a full-time 40 week program. Most classes, laboratories, and clinical experiences will take place on weekday evenings, from 4:00-10:00 PM. However, in order to provide a complete and well-rounded curriculum, a limited number of experiences may be planned for daytime and/or weekend hours.

The program meets the requirement of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing for providing at least 1,080 hours of instruction, a minimum of 945 of which are nursing courses. At least 540 hours of the nursing courses consist of clinical experience. Instruction in the discipline of nursing, appropriate to the practical nurse level will consider the entire lifespan from birth to old age, including death, and will consider changing healthcare needs and trends. In view of these trends, there will be emphasis on care of the older adult, and clinical facilities will include long-term care and rehabilitation agencies. Some clinical experience will also be scheduled in the community, recognizing the reality that an increasing amount of nursing care, including that provided by licensed practical nurses, takes place in the community.

Completion of the program leads to a practical nurse certificate and entitles the graduate to sit for the National Counsel Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The student who passes the NCLEX-PN becomes a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and is qualified to work as an entry-level licensed practical nurse
