Nurses Office

...Welcome to the Nurse's Office Page...

Many parents are concerned about teen substance abuse. There is a program for parents “Fifteen Minutes to Save Your Teen’s Life’’ that you can watch here:

Welcome To Our New Students!

I look forward to meeting all of you. Please stop by my office and introduce yourselves when you have time. There is free health information available in the office on a variety of topics. If you want information about something specific I would be glad to find it for you.

All students entering McCann need to have a recent physician physical (since September of last year) and up-to-date immunization record on file in my office prior to the beginning of the school year.

Any student needing medication during the school day needs to have a signed doctor's order and parent permission on file to have medications given by the nurse. Medications are to be brought to the nursing office by an adult. NO medications, including over-the-counter ones (ie, Tylenol or Motrin), can be carried by the students while in school. If a student needs to carry emergency medications, such as an inhaler, the doctor must sign an order saying such, and the parent must send in signed permission. The nurse needs to assess the ability of the student to self-administer prior to proceeding.

Please complete the health information form sent home with the summer packet of information. It is very important that I know of important health factors that might impact your student's education. Examples of this would be diabetes, seizure disorders, asthma, and life-threatening allergies that require the use of an epipen. Contact my office if you would like a private consultation.

All athletes must have an annual physical on file. This needs to have been done by the student's physician within thirteen months of the seaon beginning, including tryouts.

Parents, our young women need to start learning personal responsibility for their feminine hygeine products. (It amazes me how many of our young women are suprised to begin their periods each month!). Please remind your teen to carry some tampons or pads with them at all times. There is a limited supply in the nursing office for emergency use.

When students do not wear their glasses or contact lenses to school they are more prone to headaches, fatigue, and decreased ability to learn and partipate in activities. Please remind your student to use their corrective lenses appropriately.

Vision, hearing and postural screenings are completed over the course of the freshman year. The postural screening checks for the possibility of scoliosis. Parents will be informed of any screening failures in a communication sent to the home, perhaps having been given to the student. It is important to follow up with your student's doctor, and follow up on the doctor's recommendations. There may be resources available for corrective lenses if finances preclude you from buying them for your student. If you suspect your student has a problem, please contact my office and I would be glad to do the screening as early as possible.

BMI (Body Mass Index) Measurements in Grade 10

Each year, the nurse will perform Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings for all students in grade 10. According to Massachusetts State Regulations, all schools are required to perform BMI screenings (Grades 1,4,7, and 10) and report the results directly and confidentially to a parent or legal guardian. All information reported to the Department of Public health is statistical information and not based on individual student results.
Any parent who does not wish for their child to participate in this screening should submit this request in writing to their child's school nurse by the end of 2009, as screenings are scheduled to begin in January 2010.

Want some basic rules of thumb to prevent spread of infection?

*Keep your hands clean. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water, or use
alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
*Keep your hands away from your nose and mouth unless they are clean.
*Cough into your upper sleeve, or a tissue. Wash your hands afterwards.
*Don't share drinking bottles or containers.
*Keep commonly used surfaces clean.
*Stay home when sick: This means with symptoms of the flu, AND a fever of 100 or more.
Do not return to school until your fever is managed without medicine for a day.

I can be reached at 663-5383, ext 108.

Have a healthy year! Mrs. Ziemba
