600 Hour Journeyman Electrician Course

 The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electrician of the Division of Professional Licensure of the Commonwealth has approved McCann Technical School as a provider for the 600 hour electrical journeyman program.  

This program is 600 hours of classroom instruction for electrical apprentices pursuing a career towards obtaining their journeyman's electrical license.  It prepares and meets the requirements for the students to be eligible to take their Massachusetts Journeyman State Exam.

According to the Massachusetts State Board of Electrical Examiners, before an individual can be eligible to register for the electrical licensing exam, the individual must complete the following, both of which are approximately four years: 

  1. 8,000 hours of employment as an apprentice under the direct supervision of a MA Class B Journeyman license
  2. 600 hours of classroom instruction in electrical code and theory from an approved school based on the current National Electrical Code

Modules 2, 4, & 6 will start on Tues. January 3, 2023 - Classes will run Tuesday & Thursday Evenings from 5:45-9pm

Modules are 75 hours.  Module enrollment is determined by the regulations of the Board of State Examiners of Electricians of the Division of Professional Licensure of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,

Winter 2023 Offerings:

  • Module 2 - AC theory and systems (intro to AC theory, intro to fire alarm, data, security, identification and use of equipment, residential wiring) intro to blueprints (terminology wiring methods, grounding and bonding, math legends, etc)
  • Module 4 - Grounding (theory, requirements, sizing) and conductors (types/insulation, sizing/rating, installation, splicing)
  • Module 6 - Motors (theory, DC, AC, controls, motor control centers, maintenance, calculations) and Codes (Massachusetts Electrical Code, Laws {MGL 141, 143, 148, 166, etc}, Regulations {237 CMR}, State Building Code {780 CMR})
  • Module 8 - Emergency systems (requirements sizing, lighting), Code Requirements (Mass Code, CMR 237, apprenticeship) and specialties (high, voltage, hazardous locations, life safety code, HVAC)


  • Module Tuition (Including Mike Holt Study Books & Digital Modules):  $600

All payments are due before class begins. Checks should be made payable to McCann Technical School.  No credit or debit card transactions are authorized.  No payment plans will be allowed - All payments must be paid in full to begin class.  Please see refund policy below for refund information.

Refund Policy:

McCann 600 hour electrical journeyman program adheres to the following refund policy:

  • Non-attendance alone does not qualify a student for a refund.  Students must initiate, in writing, a withdrawal from the program
  • Refunds are based on the student's official withdrawal as determined by the superintendent's office
  • Full tuition refunds are granted for any program cancelled by McCann
  • A full tuition refund is given before the first day of class, 75% tuition is given for class days 1-6, 50% for class days 7-10, and no tuition refund after 10 class days.
  • Refunds are processed after the end of the refund period.  Refund checks are mailed to the student's home address on file in the superintendent’s office.
  • No refunds for books.

Required Textbooks

  1. Mike Holt electrical education series "Capacitor" system for all modules.  This is included in the cost of the program
  2. A copy of the 2020 NEC Code Book for the Fall 2022 modules.  Since the 2023 NEC Code book will update as of January 1, 2023 you will be required to purchase a new code book for the spring modules.

150 Hour Master Electrician Program

The 150 Hour Master Electrician Program will not be offered in the 2022-2023 school year.

15 Hour Code Update

The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electrician of the Division of Professional Licensure of the Commonwealth has approved McCann Technical School as a provider of the 15 hour electrical code update class and we have similarly been approved by the states of Maine New Hampshire, and Vermont.  We have also been approved to offer the 6 hour electrical calculations continuing education course.
