McCann Technical School is a member of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The mission of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is to serve member schools and the maximum number of their students by providing leadership and support for the conduct of interscholastic athletics which will enrich the educational experiences of all participants. The MIAA will promote interschool athletics that provide lifelong and life-quality learning experiences to students while enhancing their achievement of educational goals.
McCann students are eligible to participate in cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, boys’ or girls’ soccer, boys’ or girls’ basketball, hockey, swimming, wrestling, baseball and softball.
All students must meet and maintain minimum scholastic eligibility requirements. Students must have a passing grade in vocational/technical subjects as well as passing grades in at least 3 of 4 academic core subjects. Core subjects are English, mathematics, science and social studies. No waivers will be granted. Students must have an annual physical in order to participate on any team. The physician must indicate that the student is cleared to play sports.
Physical must cover athlete for entire season.
MIAA Board voted to modify the MIAA physical examination rule to remove the possibility of putting families and schools out of compliance with DPH regulations. As a result, #28 clearly eliminates the possibility of student athletes completing their season beyond the thirteen-month anniversary of their most recent physical examination. The Board was cognizant of the potential hardship and inconvenience this action may cause, but acted to ensure that all student athletes receive the protection that the more stringent DPH standard represents.
56. Student Eligibility/School Requirements: Physical Examinations/Medical Coverage/Concussions
56.1 All students must pass a physical examination prior to participation in High School Athletics. A physical exam covers the student for 13 months from the exam date. A student’s eligibility will terminate once a physical has reached the 13 month limit.
